DISEASES >> STROKE
A
stroke occurs when an artery to the brain becomes blocked or
ruptures, resulting in death of an area of brain tissue. There are two types of
strokes: ischemic (blockage of an artery) and hemorrhagic (rupture
of an artery). About 80% of
strokes are ischemic—usually due to
a blocked artery, often blocked by a blood clot.
Risk factors
- Atherosclerosis (narrowing or blockage of arteries by patchy deposits of fatty material
in the walls of arteries)
- High cholesterol levels
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Smoking
Prevention
Preventing
stroke is preferable to treating them. You can prevent
strokes by managing the major risk factors. Exercising controls
high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and diabetes. Checking up with your
doctor frequently also helps detect the risk factors and manage them. On the other
hand, those with the
symptoms of
stroke should heed the advice
of doctor.
